Feather and down that are 100% natural fully degrade in just five months: this is the result certified by the Hohenstein laboratory, a German institute internationally recognized, which guarantees tests conducted according to reliable standards.
Assopiuma, the association that since 1981 promotes and certifies feather and down products ensuring quality, traceability and sustainability, wanted to subject feather and down to scientific tests precisely to verify their real degradability.
At the end of the degradation process, the material becomes a nitrogen fertilizer, useful for agriculture and gardening.

The feather is compostable
It can therefore be stated that the feather is compostable, meaning it is a material that can transform, thanks to controlled biological processes, into useful organic matter, without leaving harmful residues. Its compostability is not a technical detail, but turns a product into a resource.
“Having a biodegradable product in a filling is essential,” explains Agostino Molina, founding member of Assopiuma. “The feather comes from nature and returns to it: nothing is thrown away. It can become slow-release fertilizer or be reused, for example transformed into keratin for cosmetics.”

100% Biodegradable
To highlight this characteristic of feather and down, Assopiuma has updated the Avorio and Oro labels, which for years have identified a filling of great quality, with the indication “100% biodegradable”, printed in green, which clearly communicates the ability of the material to fully degrade in a short time. In a world where many materials resist for decades without degrading, a certified biodegradable fiber guarantees a reduced environmental footprint. A product not only of quality, but also responsible toward the environment.
